You can find the hurdy-gurdy in many European countries, among them Sweden. The Swedish traditon of playing and making hurdy-gurdies (lira in Swedish) has been dormant for some time. But as with the Swedish bagpipe there has been a revival. There are several Swedish hurdy-gurdies in Swedish collections. The most known and played is the Grodda hurdy-gurdy from the island Gotland in the Baltic sea. It was probably made in the end of the 18th century and belonged to a family of village musicians living on the Grodda farm in the village of Fleringe. The Grodda model I make has been slightly altered to suit the needs of our time. I make both diatonic and chromatic models.
